Nestled along the Douro river, on a hill across from Porto, Portugal’s city centre lie several port houses bursting with good wines and beautiful scenery. These houses are far removed from the vast, countryside vineyards also owned by these same companies. While the vineyards stretch for miles and miles, across hills and valleys, the port houses mark the destination for the port wines. In the dark, damp cellars you’ll find barrels of wine in different stages of fermentation, and filled wine bottles stacked in man-made caves. Many of these founders started with a vision, a small plot of land and a desire to succeed and ended up with what they wanted out of life. Take a lesson from these guys and work towards your dreams because the end result is something sweet and delicious.
The ports listed below have all been happily tested at each of the port houses and have come through as our favorites. So pour yourself a glass of wine, take note, and then read our travel guide to drinking your way through Porto.
